Civilian

Blacksmiths, bartenders, wheelwrights, street sweepers - while all of these, and more, serve a valuable purpose in society, they generally don't have levels in an adventuring class. The Civilian class can represent such folk quickly and easily.

Class Features

The following are the class features of the civilian.

Weapon and Armor Proficiency

A civilian is proficient with simple weapons and light armor.

Civilian Ability

At 2nd level, and every 2 levels thereafter, a civilian gains a special ability, chosen from among the following:

  • Learn a feat that boosts a skill (such as Alertness or Skill Focus).

  • Gain a first-level ability from any adventuring class (such as Spellcasting, Resolve, etc.). They are always treated as first level in the chosen class for the purposes of this ability, regardless of their civilian level.

  • Increase the effective class level for an existing learned ability by two.

  • Learn one item creation feat they qualify for.

If the civilian later takes levels in the class that granted them a chosen ability, they add the number of levels taken as civilian abilities to their level in that class for determining the effects.

For example, a civilian might learn Spellcasting from the Shugenja class at level 2, then increase it by +1 at level 4. Then, at level 6, they could take the Craft Wondrous Item feat, since they would have 3 caster levels. If they later took a level in Shugenja, they would cast spells as though they were a 4th-level Shugenja (3 from this ability + 1 level of Shugenja).
