Enhancing Armies

Once you have built your initial army, you may see fit to enhance them further and develop them into a superior fighting force. This section covers rules for such training.

Enhancing an army can take one of several forms.

Training

Perhaps the most effective way to bolster an army's performance is through exhaustive training. An army can train any time they are garrisoned. However, for the duration of training, the Consumption for the army must be paid weekly, rather than monthly. At the end of each month of training, the commander makes a Morale+Command check against a DC equal to 10+army ACR. On a success, the army's level increases by 1. If the check succeeds by 5 or more, the army also learns a new tactical action.

Regular troops can be trained up to 1+1/3 the ruler's level. Elites can be trained all the way up to the ruler's level-2.

Instead of training up the army's level in the current class, you can attempt to multiclass them. This costs an additional 50% (2 weeks' Consumption). At the end of the month, make the usual check to level the army up, then make a DC 20 Morale check. If both checks succeed, then the army gains one level in a new class of choice. If the second check fails, the army still gains a level in their previous class. Multiclassing grants the army the special ability of the new class.

An army can only multiclass successfully once (meaning normal armies can have at most 2 classes, and armies of unusual creatures can have at most 1 class). Multiclassed armies use their original classes' HP per ACR to determine their HP, regardless of the second class.

Finally, you can train better discipline and morale into your troops. Follow the same process as for training, but the DC is only 5+ACR, and the end result is:

Outfitting

You can purchase new gear for your army at any time by paying the requisite cost for the gear. It takes one month per 25 BP for the gear to be commissioned, built, shipped, and distributed to your troops.

Reinforcing

At times, you may find that you just need more boots on the ground. You can achieve this by reinforcing an existing army. To make this improvement, you must have enough troops of the appropriate type for the army (regulars or elites) to increase the forces' size category by 1 (see Building an Army).

You add the requisite levees to the force, and increase the size category and ACR accordingly. However, the infusion of new blood lowers the overall quality and cohesion of the unit. The army's level (and ACR) decrease by 1, and the army loses 1 Morale. The level penalty can be removed using Training per the rules above, but no Morale check is needed.

You must also pay 2 BP for drafting costs, and the cost of any special equipment that is based on the number of creatures in the army (such as Mechanization).

Drafting reinforcements for an army and putting them through basic training takes one month for reinforced sizes up to Huge, and two months for reinforced sizes of Gargantual or Colossal.

You can only reinforce an army by one size category at a time.
